How Long Do Bathtub Liners Last?

For those looking for a cheaper alternative to a bathroom remodel, bathtubs liners are the perfect solution. A bathtub liner is a shell of either PVC or acrylic that is professionally tailored to fit over your existing bathtub, providing an airtight seal that prevents water from entering. Additionally, bathtub liners do not require any additional construction, making them ideal for those looking for a quick replacement to their bathtub.

How long do bathtub liners last?

In general, a bathtub liner will last anywhere between 3-5 years. This will largely depend on the condition of your bathtub and the strength of the liner itself.  After this point, it is advised that you replace your liner or risk damage and unpleasant odors from your bathtub.

Why are bathtub liners important?

When it comes to remodeling your bathtub, you have three options: Replacing your bathtub, refinishing your tub or adding a bathtub liner. Replacing your bathtub is the most costly and time-consuming of the three, with refinishing landing somewhere in the middle. Bathtub liners are important for those that don’t want to do either of the first two and simply just want a cheaper alternative that isn’t very time-consuming.

  • Durable
  • Safe, easy to maintain
  • Cost-effective/cheap
  • Do not need to replace plumbing, walls or floor

Are bathtub liners safe?

Bathtub liners are perfectly safe, as the surface is molded acrylic similar to what you may find on an acrylic bathtub surface. Liners are built with non-skid surfaces, similar to a non-slip surface, allowing for more traction. This is of great importance to those that have difficulty climbing in and out of the bathtub, specifically older people as well as the more movement impaired. Additionally, safety bars can be installed in your bathtub to make it even safer.

How often should you change your bathroom liners

As stated previously, a bathroom liner will last anywhere between 3-5 years. They can of course be used longer than this time frame, but the maximum that is ideal is around 10 years. The biggest problem with liners is that water and moisture can get in between the liner and your tub, creating mold and mildew over time. This will create heavy odors the longer you have a liner installed before changing it out, so the recommended time frame is between 3-5 years.

How to take care of your bathtub liners

Proper care of your bathtub liner is an important part of ensuring it’s longevity. Without proper care, the liner will attract mold and mildew, so proper care is necessary.

  • Using an appropriate cleanser, scrub the liner
  • Make sure to be gentle, using a microfiber cloth, sponge, or rag, spread the solution around before washing it out with water.
  • Regularly wipe the tub’s surface with a mixture of water and bleach to curb bacteria growth.
  • If mildew appears, wipe away with a mild solution of water and vinegar.
  • Always wash away any solution with water and make sure to wipe down your bathtub after cleaning to ensure that it is properly dry at all times.
