Japanese Ofuro Bathtubs

Japanese soaking tubs, traditionally called ofuro, are shorter and much deeper than Western bathtubs. You sit upright with water up to your shoulders instead of lying back in a few inches of it. Our stone resin soakers follow that principle: deep basins, simple lines, and a material that holds heat the way a thick-walled wooden ofuro does, minus the wood maintenance.

Choosing a Japanese soaking tub

What makes a soaking tub Japanese?

The proportions. A traditional ofuro trades length for depth, which is also what makes the style practical: if your bathroom can’t take a 67″ tub, a compact deep soaker gives you a fuller soak in less floor space.

Material

Classic ofuro are made of hinoki cypress. They’re beautiful, and they’re also a maintenance commitment most people regret. Stone resin gives you the two qualities that made hinoki desirable in the first place, heat retention and a warm matte feel, without the upkeep. There’s more in our ofuro bathtub guide.

Placement

Deep tubs concentrate weight in a small footprint, so check your floor load, and plan a step or surround if anyone in the house will want help getting in. Drain rough-in and faucet pairing are covered in the installation guide.

Japanese soaking tub FAQs

What is an ofuro?

Ofuro is simply the Japanese word for bath. In practice it means a short, deep tub used for relaxing after you’ve washed, with the bather seated upright and immersed to the shoulders.

How deep is a Japanese soaking tub?

Usually 22 to 27 inches of water depth. A standard Western tub holds around 14 to 16.

Do Japanese soaking tubs work in small bathrooms?

They’re arguably the best tub for a small bathroom, since the design trades length for depth. Many ofuro-style tubs fit where a standard 60″ tub won’t.
